August Feature: RMV Drum Skins

The staff at A&B Music are very happy to announce we are now dealers of RMV drum skins. RMV is a Brazilian company that makes kits, skins and hardware. Their skins are a fantastic quality entry level skin that has been well received by everyone. Here is what our head drum teacher Mark had to say about them:

RMV have created a drum head that reproduces the drum’s natural sound, acting in both high and low frequencies. RMV’s Two Ply “DEEP PERDORMER” Clear Drumhead’s are excellent for a batter head for toms and floor toms. Deep (nice mid/low end) but open sound. Similar to Remo Emperor or Evans G2. But keep in mind at a Retail price of $23.95 for a RMV 14” Drum head, most other big name drum heads with these characteristics sell for almost double RMV’s price.

When tuned on higher pitches, the overtones flow in a warm and balanced way, without sounding hard or metallic, and on lower pitches it produces a deep and controlled sound. It is a drumhead recommended for drummers with controlled beat, its unique characteristics are great for jazz, fusion, pop and rock, and passing through Brazilian drumming with lots of personality. The “Deep Performers” have a lively appeal to them and are quick and easy to tune.

RMV come in a variety of styles from single to double ply and in clear and coated to suit all players. The performance and deep Saturn are unique two ply heads which feature built in muffle rings and provide a broad scale of tuning. The Avant head also has a built in muffle ring and has proved to be very popular. Most other brand name heads with these types of features retail for almost double the price.

Previous Feature: Ulbrick Amplifiers

Ulbrick Research & Manufacturing facility in Cheltenham, Victoria, produces all products by hand, from boutique tube amplification to lovingly crafted, hand-built cabinets. All products are constructed and finished with the best materials available, resulting in the finest guitar amplifiers in production anywhere in the world.

Ulbrick amplifiers are all hand-made to military specification employing point-to-point construction where each component is directly soldered to the associated tube socket or tag strip to minimise noise and hum. No circuit board is used to ensure ultimate reliability. Each component is tested and insulated with PTFE military grade tubing and then hand-soldered with a special high silver content lead free alloy to comply with ROHS laws and deliver the ultimate in sound quality.

Ulbrick speaker cabinets are master crafted from 15mm marine grade birch ply and finished with custom made stainless steel corners and solid steel recessed handles. Each speaker is specially “pre-aged” prior to fitting to provide a more mellow tone from the outset. The TV front cabinets feature Ulbrick designed front to back bracing for absolute tonal clarity with tightly defined bass response.

The recipient of numerous accolades world wide, there can be no doubt why Ulbrick has become an industry standard, both “live” and “in the studio” and is used by some of the most significant players today. A&B Musical Instruments are the exclusive Geelong dealers of Ulbrick amplifiers and pedals so pop in today to check them out.

Stringybark McDowell

Previous Feature: Stringybark McDowell

Stringy is the man behind the A and B Music radio ads on K-Rock. A local music legend Stringy (Kenny Terrington) recently performed in store for us. His new album is called 'Simple Songs of Every Day Stuff 'n That'.

From Kenny's web site: Stringy has a raw edged sound of his own, sometimes compared to Captain Beefheart, he can be a bit of Tom Waitsy, Raw & Swampy or Finger pick it up in a pretty way. Original creator of country blues band Muddy Puddles who toured rural Australia for years whooping it up for the punters.

Stringy spent 2003 touring the U.K. successfully including The Great British R&B Festival, with plans to return for a shorter tour in 2006.

Stringy performs as a one man band playing Acoustic & electric guitars, including his famous Diddley bow, Raw gritty vocals, "Doof Doof" the 14 '' kick drum, "Lefty" a home made snarey highhatty rattle, A bit of rack harp and kazoo.
