Where Can Music Take You?

November 15, 2005

Stuart writes:

Sunday afternoons presentation of "Where Can Music Take YOU?" was enjoyed immensely by those in attendance.

Generally the afternoon consisted of a forum with a variety of speakers sharing information about their own music knowledge and the pathway it has taken them.

In summary:

  • Jon Madins presentation was audience interactive with his homemade instruments and some terrific rhythm patterns for everyone to play.
  • Mark Marshall explained the examination methods of ABRSM whose gradings were recognized worldwide.
  • Brian Alexander values his music knowledge that helps with his role at K Rock in producing commercials for clients and getting the correct music balance for the stations demographics.
  • Katherine Gray, whilst be a student of Pharmacology at Monash Uni., is able to earn a part time income in a wholesale and retail music store in Melbourne thanks to her knowledge that she gained having violin lessons as a child.
  • Franc Tetaz, composer of the very current movie "Wolf Creek" soundtrack, also began with violin lessons, did a sound engineering course, built his own studio and composed scores for short films which has lead to "Wolf Creek" and larger productions are in the pipeline.
  • Sandra Douglas teaches piano/keyboard and uses the ANZCA syllabus predominantly for her students was very informative as to why this method suits their needs.
  • Amy Werts effervescent enthusiasm for teaching music has also lead to receiving a scholarship for conducting which has taken her around the world. This wealth of knowledge she sees as vital to new students as well as older or ex players coming together as community bands for everyones self benefit.
  • Russell Woodford, being a classroom teacher, has been able to bring his methods to a much wider audience by using several means for teaching music using technology and the internet.
  • Bill van Parreren spoke of his passion for guitar being able to play in bands to earn a part time income for over 30 years, meeting people and traveling, then turning it into a family retail and service business as it is today.

This was truly an informative afternoon that was the brainchild of Heather Tetaz. We all thank Heather for all of her hard work and dedication in putting this together.
